Drumming Bio / Playing Experience
Andy got his first drum kit aged 15 and although being largely self-taught, he took lessons at school initially to get started. He was soon playing for school groups, productions, and local amateur dramatic shows. Going on to study music at degree level opened the door to a whole host of new playing opportunities from covers bands to jazz and world music ensembles.
Whilst at university Andy took a number of lessons from respected Brazilian percussionist Sam Alexander. Performance highlights at this time included playing snare drum in a carnival-style procession along the Thames in London, culminating in a performance onstage alongside Sam and other musicians at Gabriel’s Wharf on the Southbank, and also a large-scale gig at Alexandra Palace for Vodafone.
For around six years Andy was a member of the acoustic/experimental group Semble. He contributed to 3 albums and an EP released by the band. African percussion work with Semble (Andy often played Djembe for songs) led to a recording session for Channel 4's 'Time Team' programme. Semble performances included several years in the 'Green Fields' area at the Glastonbury Festival, plus gigs at London’s Borderline and 12-Bar Club.
Other playing experience includes:
- Backing singer-songwriters as part of the musician’s collective Wupa Dupa - Playing in various covers / function bands - venues including the London Park Lane Hilton & Villa Aurelia, Rome - Playing for shows including a musical at the Edinburgh Festival and a professional Panto
